Mayor flags off cycle rally to Kanyakumari

Bengaluru: Mayor G Padmavathi on Thursday emphasized the need to keep surroundings clean not only in Bengaluru but also slum areas and rural areas.

Speaking with media persons after flagging off 23 cyclists from MG Road as part of Swachh Bharat tour from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Mayor Padmavathi said the need of the hour was to keep surrounding clean. “Clean surroundings, clean atmosphere and clean water should become priority not only in cities but also in rural areas. I want to appreciate the youth for embarking on this tour aimed at creating awareness among the public on cleanliness,’’ the Mayor said.

The event is in aid of the Swachh Bharat Programme and the Rotary Foundation Centennial project of Rotary Club of Madras Midtown, supported by Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Event was managed in Bengaluru by Rotary Bangalore Metro.

The Ministry of Urban Development along with Rotary Club of Madras Midtown RI district 3230 is organizing a cycle Rally from Kashmir to Kanyakumari promoting cleanliness and hygiene and carrying the Swachh Bharat message. This rally also commemorates the centennial celebration of The Rotary Foundation for its Humanitarian work including Clean and Green India

The rally of 23 Swachhagrahi Cyclists was flagged off on November 7 2016 from Jammu by Dr Nirmal Singh, Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

The rally passed through Pathankot, Ludhiana, Jallandar,Ambala, Sonepat, New Delhi,Neemrana,Jaipur,Ajmer, Bhilwara,Udaipur, Gandhinagar,Surat,Vapi, Mumbai,Pune,Kolhapur, Dharwad ,Chitradurga, Tumkur before reaching Bengaluru on Wednewsday.

The Rotary Clubs of all these cities along with the respective Municipal authorities or corporations have organized the necessary arrangements and have ensured that the culture of the places are highlighted along with the work being done by Rotary Clubs in the area of cleanliness and hygiene.

After a night’s rest the rally was flagged of by Mayor Padmavathi and Rotary International District 3190 Governor Rtn. Ananth HR. The Bengaluru arrangements were done by the BBMP along with the Rotary Bangalore Metro to ensure that the memory of Bengaluru will remain eternal and its name is etched in the history of Rotary as the participant of the first event held by Rotary International to this magnitude and scale joining 33 cities and about 75 clubs in its journey of 5000 kms form Jammu to Kanyakumari

As expected the general public and cycling enthusiasts of Bengaluru also joined these Swachhagrahis till the outskirts of Bengaluru on their way to Vellore which will be the next halt in the journey towards Kanyakumari.
