Namma Metro returns to the profit track

Bengaluru: The income of the Namma Metro is finally showing an upward trend. The BMRCL income through ticket sale, has increased after the full-fledged commission of trains in all routes of phase one. In the first six months, the BMRCL earned Rs 175 crore through ticket sale.

The first phase of the metro was inaugurated by Former President Pranab Mukharji. According to Namma Metro sources, after the completion of the first phase, the metro service has returned to the profit track. The income of BMRCL was Rs 18.05 crore in June and by November it increased to Rs 28 crore. It also aims to run the service without any government aid within a year.

According to the annual report, in the 2015-16 financial year the metro had earned Rs 44.97 crore through its service (ticket sale and other trade income). Here the income through ticket sale was Rs 28.28 crore. In 2016-17, the metro had collected Rs 130.28 crore through its service including, Rs 110.10 crore from ticket sale.

However, in 2017-18, the collection of the first six months (up to September end) was Rs 115.48 crore and Namma Metro earned around Rs 77 crore. From the month of July, around 5.50 crore additional passengers traveled in both ways of the metro. The number is gradually increasing day-by-day.

Meanwhile, Namma Metro has got a lukewarm response for the extension of duration on the eve of Christmas (Sunday) in both paths till 1 am. In total 3.07 lakh passengers traveled on the day including 1.49 lakh in the green line and 1.58 lakh in the purple line, said sources. On the occasion of ‘Bengaluru Habba’, the metro received a great response as vehicles were banned in Ambedkar road.
