Bengaluru: A report by NIMHANS and Underwriters Laboratory, a global safety certification company, has revealed that nearly half of the schools in Bengaluru city and Kolar don’t follow safety measures, resulting in injuries to the students.
The report has been compiled after reviewing the safety measures followed in 131 schools in both the districts.
According to the report, only 50.8% of the schools follow all the safety measures while the rest of the schools are yet to implement the government’s directions.
The report pointed out that in most of the schools, pillars and floors are not as per the guidelines. The floors of 54.2% of the schools are rough. Good roads and pedestrian walkways are available only near 20.8% of the schools. In most of the places, there are no signboards to indicate that the area is a school zone. Speed limit indicators are installed near only 11.5% of the schools.
The report also pointed out that only 43% of the school vehicles have CCTV cameras. GPS has been installed in only 58% of the school buses and in 90% of the schools, no documentation about the injuries sustained by the students inside the campus is being maintained.
Other major findings of the report include poor first aid facilities, poor fire safety measures etc.
