No Shadi Bhagya for rich and elite, scheme goes online

Bengaluru: Two years ago, when the then state government led by Siddaramaiah introduced the Shadi Bhagya scheme, it was criticised as the appeasement project aimed at consolidating the votes of the Muslim community. Two years later, following the large-scale complaints that this scheme is misused by the mighty and the influential, the state government has decided to scrap the offline application system. Henceforth, the beneficiaries can apply for financial assistance under the scheme only online.

Under the Shadi Bhagya scheme, Rs.50,000 financial assistance was given to the family of the bride. One of the common complaints was that while releasing the money seniority was not followed. Thousands of families are yet to get the benefit under the scheme.

Now the directorate of minorities has decided to transform the scheme online with the idea to do away with manual intervention.

As per the rules, Aadhar card and the SSLC marks cards of both bride and bride grooom has been made compulsory. Authorities are confident that once the system goes online the scheme will become transparent.
