A puzzling case of a one-day arranged marriage has surfaced near Chintamani, where a 24-year-old woman has allegedly gone missing from her husband’s house, raising suspicions of deception and foul play.
Marriage arranged and solemnised within hours
The incident was reported from Gownicheruvupalli village under Batlahalli police limits. Bhaskar, a native of Madanapalli in Andhra Pradesh and an employee at a private firm in Bengaluru, had been searching for a bride when he was approached by three marriage brokers, including a relative.
On February 27, Bhaskar met the woman, identified as Nethra from Kotlapalli near Marganapalli. Within hours of their first meeting, the two agreed to marry, and the wedding was conducted the same day. Bhaskar allegedly paid ₹75,000 to one of the brokers as part of the arrangement.
Woman goes missing after 15 days
Following the marriage, the couple stayed at Bhaskar’s uncle’s house in Gownicheruvupalli for about 15 days. On March 15, Bhaskar travelled to his hometown, leaving his wife behind.
Later that evening, he received a call informing him that Nethra had gone missing. Despite immediate efforts by the family to locate her, she could not be traced. Bhaskar returned and filed a complaint with Batlahalli police.
Claims of deception deepen mystery
In his complaint, Bhaskar alleged that he had been pressured into the hurried marriage by brokers, who warned him that the bride would otherwise be given to someone else.
Further complicating the case, he later claimed that Nethra was already married, had two children, and had undergone a tubectomy—raising serious doubts about her identity and background.
Police probe underway
Sub-inspector Shivakumar confirmed that while Bhaskar verbally claimed that the woman took gold ornaments with her, there is no mention of missing jewellery in the official complaint.
Police have launched an investigation to trace the missing woman, verify her identity, and examine the role of the brokers involved in arranging the marriage.
Growing concern over fraudulent marriages
The incident has sparked concern over fraudulent and rushed marriage arrangements, particularly those involving middlemen. Authorities have urged individuals and families to exercise caution and verify backgrounds thoroughly before entering such agreements.
