Bengaluru: The RMC Yard police opened fire at a criminal after the latter allegedly attacked a police constable. It is the third incident within a week in Bengaluru.

According to the police, just after midnight on Sunday, Ashwath, 22, a resident of Chikkasandra, waylaid Anniyappa and stole a scooter, mobile phones and Rs. 300 in cash at Mariyappapalya. The RMC Yard police received an alert.

A team of police tracked Ashwath and surrounded him in the wee hours of Monday.

The police said Ashwath did not relent, and tried to attack Akash, a police constable with a machete. The inspector fired in the air and when Ashwath did not stop, the officer was forced to shoot in the leg.

The police said Ashwath has four cases of theft against him in various police stations and had come out of prison on bail just a month ago.
