Bengaluru police have arrested Govindaraju, 49, a chief ticket inspector with South Western Railway (SWR), for allegedly cheating government job aspirants by promising to manipulate competitive examination results.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) S Girish confirmed the arrest, stating it was purely a case of fraud. Complaints revealed Govindaraju was collecting hefty sums—up to ₹25 lakh for a Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) post and ₹50 lakh for Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) prelims—while assuring candidates he would alter their Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets.

After evading authorities for days, Govindaraju was detained on December 28 near Vijayanagara. Attempts to flee during the arrest were thwarted, and police seized four mobile phones from him. During interrogation, he admitted to targeting aspirants of KAS and PDO exams, often instructing them to mark only known answers, falsely claiming he would handle the rest.

The investigation uncovered certificates from 46 individuals, images of cheques, and related documents from one of his residences. A senior officer revealed Govindaraju had a similar case filed against him in 2018.

Police have charged him under Sections 318(4) (cheating) and 61(1)(a) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
