Bengaluru: According to poll officials, on Wednesday October 14, a total of 19 candidates are in fray in the Assembly constituencies of Sindagi and Hanagal for the October 30 by-elections.
Two candidates from Sindagi and four from Hanagal withdrew their candidacy papers on Thursday October 14, leaving six and thirteen candidates in the race from the two constituencies, respectively.
Sindagi has two female candidates. On November 2, all votes will be counted.
The by-elections were called after the deaths of Sindagi JD (S) legislator M. C. Managuli and BJP’s C. M. Udasi from Hanagal.
The BJP’s candidate for Sindagi is Ramesh Bhusanur, who came second after Managuli in the 2018 elections and the candidate for Hanagal is Shivaraj Sajjanar.
The Congress has chosen Ashok Managuli, Managuli’s son, as its candidate for Sindagi, while former MLC Srinivas Mane as the party’s candidate for Hanagal.
JD (S), which was the first to declare its candidates, has chosen Naziya Shakeel Ahmed Angadi from Sindagi, and Niyaz Shaikh from Hanagal.
This election is Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s first electoral challenge after taking charge. As Hanagal is the nearby seat to his Shiggaon Assembly segment, retaining it is even more crucial to him.
By ensuring a victory, the Congress hopes to gain momentum in the run-up to the State’s 2023 Assembly elections, while the JD (S) hopes to keep Sindagi and show that it still has a strong support base in the northern districts.
According to Congress officials, the JD (S) intentionally fielded minority candidates in the Hanagal and Sindagi by-elections to help the BJP.
