Bengaluru: State government’s ambitious Indira Canteen project has already hit rock block. The project that intended to build 200 canteens in the state capital to provide quality food at subsidised cost, on lines of Amma Canteen in Tamilnadu is facing trouble in several places of the city following increasing objection to the site selected for the construction. Following the opposition, the BBMP has decided not to use playgrounds and park areas for the construction of the canteen buildings.
First resistance to Indira canteen building came up from the BBMP head quarters itself as it is the heritage building. Later, canteen site was shifted to another place. According to the officials, now opposition for canteen buildings have come up from around 28 locations across the city as they are either in park or playground lands that the authorities planned to build the canteen.
“With this resistance, we have decided to move the canteen sites. There is a proposal to use the existing BBMP ward level office premises in all those areas,” explained an officer.
It can be recalled that state government wants to launch these Indira canteens as Independence Day gift to the city residents.
