In preparation for the Lok Sabha elections, Bengaluru authorities have introduced stringent measures aimed at upholding law and order during the polling process. These measures, effective from April 24 to April 26, include the enforcement of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

Prohibitory Orders Under Section 144

From 6 pm on April 24 until midnight on April 26, various activities will be strictly prohibited in Bengaluru. These include public meetings, rallies, gatherings of more than five people, burning of effigies, possession of lethal weapons, provocative speeches, and the public raising of political slogans.

Restrictions Near Polling Booths

No campaigning, use of banners, or placards will be allowed within a 100-meter radius of the polling booths during this period. Additionally, carrying cell phones and other electronic devices within the same radius is prohibited, except for authorized officials and staff.

Exception for Permitted Processions

Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayananda emphasized that law and order must be maintained, even during permitted processions such as weddings. The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is to be strictly adhered to, with funeral processions being the only exception.

Closure of Educational Institutions

To ensure a smooth voting process, schools, colleges, and other educational institutions located in the voting districts will remain closed on the polling dates.

Dry Days

Alcohol sales will be prohibited in Bengaluru from 12 am on April 26 to 12 am on April 27, coinciding with the polling dates. Additionally, alcohol sales will also be banned from 12 am on June 3 to 12 am on June 4, aligning with the counting of votes. While hotels and restaurants will be permitted to serve food and non-alcoholic drinks, alcohol sales will be restricted in stores, pubs, lodging facilities, dining establishments, and taverns.

Conclusion

With the Lok Sabha elections scheduled in two phases in Karnataka on April 26 (Phase 2) and May 7 (Phase 3), these measures are implemented to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and maintain peace and order in Bengaluru.
