Berngaluru: The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday June 7 filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) which is supposed to discuss State’s Mekedatu Dam Project Report at its meeting to be held on June 17, said Duraimurugan, Minister for Water Resources.

In a statement issued here, Duraimurugan said the state government has filed a new petition in the Supreme Court against CWMA discussing the Mekedatu Dam Project Report.

He said the CWMA in its letter dated May 25, 2022 had said it has the power to discuss the Rs 9,000 crore Mekedatu Dam Project Report.

Replying to that letter, the Tamil Nadu government on June 4, 2022 had said that the CWMA’s decision is in contravention of the Supreme Court’s order dated May 18, 2018 and the central government’s announcement on the powers and duties of the Authority, Duraimurugan said.

Reacting to the development, PMK Founder S. Ramadoss said it is shocking to hear that CWMA would discuss the Mekedatu Dam project at its meeting when there is a case pending in the apex court.

Ramadoss said the central government had earlier said that with the consent of downstream state Tamil Nadu, Karnataka cannot build any dam across the river Cauvery.

He said the central government should cancel its consent given to Karnataka to prepare the Mekedatu project report.
