National Agricultural Co Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited ( NAFED ) dry coconut buying center in Tumkur on hearing the plea of local farmers, who were facing a setback on the first day with the many severe issues, has finally come to their rescue. It will now quicken the pace and address the concerns of these farmers, who felt that the process lacked integrity while compared to how it worked in districts like Hassan.
While Tumkur saw 61 percent registrations on the first day, Hassan saw double. However, Hassan did seem to show some illicit practices in the process, with additional laptops registering with the same password to get things done faster.
That was when marketing federation MD, R. Sridhar, stepped into the picture to look into the matter and ensure that the staff are more transparent in their process, as unfair processes could greatly affect the farmers and put their livelihood at stake.
However, this should not happen, as Tumkur has a vast area of about 2,25,000 hectares to cultivate these coconuts. Yet, it sees a low registration rate. And so, it is only normal that farmers come forward to express their concern in this situation, asking for a fairer treatment.
Take for example, what happened on Wednesday, where farmers were unable to sell coconuts to the NAFED all thanks to the disparity in registration rates. Yet, in spite of all this, the authorities in Tumkur remain quiet instead of addressing the unrest and rectifying the injustice that is clearly challenging the income of the farmers at the end of the day.
So, till the authorities come forward, the problem will be a pressing issue in Tumkur, which is only fair on the part of the farmers who see how coconut does not grow equally in all seven districts.
