Tumakuru: A youth was allegedly beaten to death by the owner of a farm for stealing two banana stalks from a farm. Also later, it is alleged that he took him to the Police stations and got him beaten up by the Police.
The deceased has been identified as Purushottam Prasad (35), son of Basthappa, a resident of Idihalli in the taluk. He is married and has two children. On September 30, he was beaten up by the owner of the farm for allegedly stealing two banana stalks from his farm at Maidanahalli in Kodigenahalli and later brought him to Kodigenahalli Police Station where he was beaten up. The deceased’s father, Basthappa, said they had imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 in the morning. For a few days, due to pain, the son’s private area was swollen and the pain in the back and chest areas increased. It is alleged that he finally wandered to the hospitals and could not bear the pain at the Tumakuru District Hospital and died on Monday October 17.
Earlier, he was treated at idhalli hospital, Madhugiri Hospital and District Hospital but did not recover. Basthappa has lodged a complaint with the police alleging that the owner of the farm was responsible for this.
Leaders of Dalit organisations visited the spot and demanded that those responsible for the death of the deceased youth be punished appropriately.
A complaint has been lodged against the owner of the farm, Balaji Reddy, and his associates.
