Kumaraswamy Layout police have arrested a 40-year-old woman from Bagalkote for stealing nearly 200 grams of gold ornaments from the residence of her friend’s relatives in Isro Layout.
The theft was reported from the house of Basavaraj Ningappa Pashupatihal, a private firm employee whose wife had recently passed away. On June 1, Basavaraj had his house painted, and that night his mother-in-law, Shobha Teggi, and her friend Kasturi stayed at the house. The two women cleaned a room where Basavaraj had stored gold ornaments in a bag and slept there overnight.
The next day, they continued cleaning, and later in the evening, Kasturi left with her husband. Basavaraj also travelled to his native Gadag and, upon returning on June 6, discovered the ornaments missing. However, he lodged a complaint only on June 16.
Following investigations, Inspector R Jagadeesh and his team detained Kasturi on August 1 in Mudhol taluk. During questioning, she confessed to the theft. Police recovered 114 grams of gold ornaments worth ₹10 lakh from her husband, while efforts are underway to trace the remaining jewellery.
In a separate case, Girinagar police arrested a habitual offender, Syed Ahmed J (42), from Bangarpet, who had burgled the home of photographer Chikkegowda DR in New BDA Layout on May 29. He allegedly stole 95 grams of gold ornaments worth ₹8 lakh. Police recovered 117 grams of gold valued at over ₹10 lakh from him.
Ahmed has over 30 prior cases, and with his arrest, police said they solved at least two pending burglary cases.
