Bengaluru: Wishing all the women a ‘Happy Women’s Day’, former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) supremo H D Deve Gowda urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to implement the Women’s Reservation Bill which was proposed when he was the PM.

Taking to twitter on Sunday, March 8, Deve Gowda said, “I wish all the women a Happy Women’s Day. Wholesome development of the country is possible only when women empowerment is in place politically, socially and economically. For this reason, when I was the chief minister of Karnataka, I had implemented a reservation for women in government jobs.”

In another tweet, he wrote, “When I was the prime minister of the country in the year 1996, I had proposed the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Parliament. I urge Prime Minister @narendramodi to kindly implement this Bill. #HappyWomensDay2020.”

It can be recalled that on September 12, 1996, HDD had proposed the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Parliament. The legislation proposed 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and in all state legislative assemblies. The bill is yet to get a nod in the Lower House of Parliament (Lok Sabha) despite its reintroduction.
