A commuter on Bengaluru’s newly launched Yellow Line metro was reportedly fined for “overstaying” after being unable to board at Silk Board station.
Nikhil (@Nikhil_Bhat6) shared the incident on X, posting a photo of the fine receipt issued by the Namma Metro Fare Collection System. He wrote, “The Yellow Line is great, but it’s nearly useless if you’re not boarding near the starting points. Waited 20 minutes at Silk Board, train arrived overcrowded, many couldn’t enter. I exited the same station and got charged ₹50 plus ₹9.5 as a penalty.”
The incident occurred on August 12, just a day after the Yellow Line began operations between RV Road and Bommasandra. Several netizens have since voiced frustration, calling on the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to remove the overstay charge on this stretch until service frequency improves.
The account “Bangalore Metro Updates” wrote on X, “This is a terrible experience. A 20–25 minute wait is understandable with the current train shortage, but fining passengers for overstaying is unreasonable. BMRCL should halt this penalty until service intervals are better.”
A BMRCL spokesperson said it appeared to be an isolated case, noting that no similar complaints had been recorded so far. “The same regulations currently apply to all metro lines unless the management decides differently. We’ve already informed riders about the 25-minute wait time, so ideally, such issues shouldn’t arise,” the official stated.
