The floriculture sector in Chikkamagaluru district is facing significant challenges following recent rains and the conclusion of Ayudha Puja and Vijayadashami celebrations. The demand for flowers has sharply declined, with supplies from Bengaluru dwindling, adversely affecting both vendors and growers. Despite the current downturn, there remains cautious optimism for the upcoming Diwali festivities.
During the Dasara celebrations, flower prices peaked, with jasmine garlands fetching up to ₹400 each, a dramatic increase from their usual price of around ₹50. However, demand has since dropped, and the incessant rains have further complicated supply chains. Local traders have cut back on their purchases of chrysanthemums from Bengaluru, receiving only two to three bags daily instead of the typical 30-40 kg.
Heavy rainfall in and around Bengaluru has hindered transportation of flowers to Chikkamagaluru, given their perishable nature. To adapt, traders are sourcing chrysanthemums from Tumakuru and Kadur, with prices ranging from ₹60 to ₹80 per bunch. Jasmine and Mysore jasmine continue to command high prices, selling for ₹80 to ₹100 per bunch, while the Kanakambara flower is notably absent due to decreased demand and transportation difficulties.
Despite these setbacks, flower trader Ravi remains hopeful that the upcoming month of Kartika will boost demand as festivals, including Diwali, approach. Currently, marigold prices have plummeted from ₹100 per kg during Vijayadashami to just ₹20 per kg.
