Karwar: Over 100 BJP workers and members of various Hindutva organisations were arrested by the police on Thursday for violating ban orders imposed in wake of Tipu Jayanthi.
Uttara Kannada MP Anant Kumar Hegde and MLA Vishweshwara Hegde among several others were nabbed for opposing the celebrations in Uttara Kannada district.
Ananth Kumar has earlier warned of a stir on November 10 if the celebration is held in the district and accordingly, when he and the MLA arrived in Sirsi for the protest, the police took them into custody for defying the ban order.
Since the MP was seen not wearing his shirt, he claimed that he was picked by the police from his residence and not from the protest venue. Most of the party workers who were arrested were too seen wearing either a vest or without shirts. They were later released.
Similarly in Karwar, BJP workers were taken into custody for trying to violate ban orders. They were released later. Similar protests were staged in many taluks.
