Karwar: The Devbhag and Majali Fishermen’s Fighters’ Committee on Thursday September 22 submitted a petition to the Government through the District Administration, demanding the abandonment of the proposed fishing harbour Project in Majali.

Fishermen who arrived from Majali, Devbhag and other parts gathered near the Deputy Commissioner’s Office of the City and demanded that the construction of the port would cause problems for the fishermen and that the project should be aborted soon.

Most of the residents of the villages of Majali, Hippalli, Dandebagh, Nechkanabagh, Bawal and Devabhag of Karwar Taluk are involved in the fishing profession and have adopted various types of fishing profession such as Andi Bale, Beesu Bale, Marana Bale, Yedi Bale along with mechanised fishing. There are about 6000 traditional fishermen and more than 2000 traditional fishing boats in this area. The boat stops are Majali and Devbagh beach. In this regard, a plan has been drawn up to construct a fishing harbour at Majali beach under the Saagarmala project in collaboration with the Central and State Governments. Due to this, the fishermen of this area are worried. In the petition, if the petition is rejected and the fishing harbour project is taken up, all the fishermen of this area are ready to protest and fight against the project in all kinds of ways.

The petition was submitted by the committee to the Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan. Devabhag and Majali Fishermen’s Struggle Committee President Devaraya Yashwant Sail, Anandu Khobrekar, Satish Sail, Satish Hakoda, Vithaba, Rama Harikantra and several fishermen were in the delegation to submit the petition.
