Karwar: Urban Development Minister B A Basavaraj assured the people here that the water problem faced by the district will be resolved soon.
He was speaking after inaugurating the project works to be undertaken for supplying water from Sharavati river to nine gram panchayats around Honnavar town in Honnavar on Wednesday March 3. He said that there should never be shoddy development of works, when it comes to water supply projects. Making water available to public should be our priority and it is saddening that despite five rivers in the region we are not able to make good use of the available water, he added.
Further, he warned of strict action against poor-quality works and stressed that the project work which was inaugurated today should be completed on time. He also observed that there should be no room for politics when it comes to development works as region’s development should be given priority.
Speaking on the occasion, District In-charge Minister Shivram Hebbar said that the district has been reeling under water problem, both for drinking water and water for agricultural purposes, for over three decades, despite having five rivers in the region. More so, what’s alarming is that in the last two decades, the region has seen 14 years of famine and our farmers have been rendered helpless, unable to grow crops in fertile land available, due to water problem, he said.
He stressed that if water is made available to farmers, they will not even seek loan. It is government’s duty that the people get best out of five rivers in the region. He also added that people in Dandeli too are facing water scarcity and are in need of a suitable water supply project.
Honnavar MLA Dinakar Shetty presided over the programme.
