Aloysius College organises seminar on ‘Banking before and after nationalisation’

Mangaluru: “In business or banking, ethics and good governance are the most important factors. Hence, students should focus on following ethics”, informed C A Pereira, former chairman and managing director, Bank of Maharashtra and former director, National Institute of Bank Management.

He was delivering the keynote address at a national seminar on ‘Banking before and after nationalisation’ organised by the Department of Economics, St. Aloysius College (Autonomous) at LCRI Hall on Friday, July 19. Pereira said, ”Nationalisation of banks took the banking to the masses. During the first decade of nationalisation of banks, the growth rate diminished due to several cases of insolvency and bankruptcy. There is tremendous scope for the Indian economy to be one of the fastest-growing economies.”

St. Aloysius College Principal Rev. Dr. Praveen Martis SJ presiding over the programme, said that a lot of experiments had taken place in the banking sector and that the students have ample career opportunities in banking. He further said that the budding talents had a bright future in the field of banking sector for showcasing their talents as economists or bankers.

Dr. G V Joshi, renowned Economist, Dr. T Mallikarjunappa, Professor, Department of MBA and Dean of Faculty of Commerce, Mangalore University and T R Bhat, former director, Corporation Bank and social activist were the resource persons. They spoke on ‘Nationalised Banks as Catalysts of Change”, ‘The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, The Corporate Sector and The Role of Banks in India’ and ‘The Nationalized Banks: Challenges Ahead’, respectively.

The conference was organised to commemorate the 50th year of bank nationalisation. Nicole Serrao compered the programme. Shwetha Arehole staged a welcome dance. Dr. Norbert Lobo welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest. Dr. Priya Shetty proposed a vote of thanks.
