Mangaluru: ‘RECYCLEINDIA.ORG’, a unique website dedicated to waste segregation hosted by Anti Pollution Drive (APD) Foundation was launched by the newly elected MLAs, D. Vedavyas Kamath and Dr Y. Bharath Shetty in the presence of Corporator Roopa D Bangera, District Information Officer Kadar Shah and Dr Ronald Fernandes, President of Mangalore Press Club during a function held at Padua Pre University College Auditorium, Kadri Hills on Thursday, June 14. The formal launch of the website was followed by an Inter-faith Harmony Meet on the occasion of Ramadan.

Briefing about the new website, founder of APD Foundation Abdullah A. Rehman said ‘RECYCLEINDIA.ORG’ was developed on the basis of an award from UN-Habitat and Narotam Sekharia Foundation, Mumbai. It is based on APD’s experience gained over the past two years in aggressively undertaking awareness and behavioural change programmes regarding waste segregation in the city collaboration with Antony Waste Handling Cell for the Mangaluru City Corporation.

“Mangalore has been ranked as the best city in solid waste management under the Swacch Survekshan initiative of the central government. But in terms of waste segregation, we have hardly reached any milestone and we have much to do in the segment. Hence, we have undertaken this major initiative to launch a comprehensive website for providing the correct information to the public regarding the handling of waste in a scientific and sustainable manner. It gives a ready reference on 200+ waste segregation methods and materials along with connecting the people to the local recycling centres in the city. Though this website is presently Mangalore centric, in the future it can be scaled up for state-wide and then nation-wide coverage. We also have larger plans to actively promote this website and introduce further verticals and features,” Abdullah A. Rehman said.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Vedavyas Kamath said, “I compliment APD Foundation for their unique website which will bring knowledge about waste segregation and keep the environment clean. Continued growth of Mangaluru city is generating a huge quantity of solid waste. This has raised a need for effective waste management. I will do my best to help the efforts to bring awareness among citizens of Mangaluru on waste segregation, which would benefit a lot while further processing at the dump yard. Let us all join together to keep our city clean and save our environment.”

MLA Dr Y. Bharath Shetty lauded the efforts put in by APD Foundation and urged the citizens to segregate waste (separate wet from dry waste). Corporator Roopa Bangera said that every household faced the problem of safe disposal of domestic waste and hoped that the website would help the people by giving correct information.

The dignitaries also released APD Foundation’s new brochure on the occasion. Following the formal function, snacks were distributed to the audience as part of Iftar-Inter Religious Harmony get-together.

Bhaskar Arasa welcomed the gathering. Students of Samvedana Home for Children rendered the prayer. Madhu Mailankody was the Master of Ceremony for the programme and proposed a vote of thanks.
