Mangaluru: If the water bills of high-rise buildings are not paid within three months of issuance, then the water connection would be disconnected automatically.

This system will be initiated on a pilot project in Mangaluru soon, said Minister for Urban Development and Housing and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister U T Khader.

While addressing the gathering after inaugurating a full-fledged six-storeyed market-cum-commercial complex at the Urwa Market on Sunday, January 27 Khader said, “though people from poor financial background pay water bills within the due date, commercial complexes and those who are living in multi-storeyed apartments don’t pay the bill amount. Hence, the department of urban development is planning to introduce a new system, wherein water connection would be disconnected automatically if the water bills are pending for more than three months. The project to be taken up on a pilot basis will be extended to other districts also if it attains success”, he said.

MLC Ivan D’Souza asked the vendors to give more importance to cleanliness. “Now Urwa Market looks like a five-star hotel. It is the responsibility of vendors and public to keep the market clean”, he said.

The new market building was constructed at the cost of Rs 12.62 crore. It has 122 stalls for sale of chicken, fish, vegetables, flowers etc. Proper space is also available in the building to park two and four wheeler vehicles.

Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath presided over the programme. Mayor Bhaskar K, MUDA Chairman Srikanth Rao, MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer among others were present.
