Amidst confirmed cases of bird fever in two gram panchayats of Alapuzha district, Kerala, heightened vigilance measures are being implemented, particularly along the Kerala-Dakshina Kannada (DK) district border.

Establishment of Special Check Posts

Starting Monday, special check posts will be set up at Talapady, Jalsoor, and Saradka to sanitize vehicles transporting poultry from Dakshina Kannada to Kerala and back. These measures aim to prevent the spread of the disease.

Statement from Veterinary Department

Dr. Arun Kumar, Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department, confirmed the bird fever outbreak in Alapuzha district, approximately 400 km away from Mangaluru. This marks the second reported case in the district. Although Dakshina Kannada has not reported any cases yet, proactive measures are being taken.

Understanding Bird Fever

Dr. Kumar explained that bird fever primarily affects migrating birds, although migration is less common during the summer season. The virus can spread from infected chickens to other birds and even to humans, particularly those working in poultry farms and meat processing units. However, it does not transmit from person to person.

These efforts underscore the importance of proactive monitoring and preventive measures to curb the spread of bird fever in the region.
