Mangaluru: As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has decided to stop celebrating Tipu Jayanthi, the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, many organisations in the city have welcomed the move.
Rashtriyavadi Christara Vedike (RCV) founder Franklin Montero in a press release informed that RCV would welcome the move of Yediyurappa government as Tipu was a communal ruler and he had killed thousands of Christians and Hindus. Instead of celebrating Tipu Jayanthi, the birthday of former president Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, can be celebrated in a grand manner on October 15, he opined.
Dakshina Kannada district Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura also welcomed the move of the state government and informed that it was the wish of the entire state.
Bajrang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell informed that Siddaramaiah led Congress government had started Tipu Jayanti only to please Muslim community. “We need to oppose Tipu Sultan as he was a selfish and communal minded king. Hence, all fringe groups would welcome the decision of the government”, he informed.
The Tipu Jayanti celebrations were started by the Siddaramaiah government in 2015 and was observed in November every year. In the past, the BJP had led heated protests against the Tipu Jayanti. However, the Congress and the JDS have defended saying that Tipu was a valiant ruler who defended the land from the Britishers and died fighting them.
