Recently appointed as the 10th vice-chancellor of Mangalore University, PL Dharma faces a daunting task ahead as the institution grapples with both academic and administrative challenges. The four-decade-old university, currently dealing with issues such as a slipped NAAC grading to B under the previous VC PS Yadapadithaya, requires immediate attention on multiple fronts.
Among the pressing concerns is the financial strain that Mangalore University is experiencing, making it challenging to secure funds for various needs, including payments to guest faculties. Additionally, unresolved issues related to evaluation, mark cards, and administrative matters further compound the university’s challenges. The upcoming convocation, scheduled in a few weeks, demands urgent preparation.
Addressing these issues is crucial to restoring the university’s image, especially in the aftermath of an ED raid linked to a recruitment scam. Syndicate members, emphasizing Dharma’s capability in handling university affairs, underscored the need for him to address the institution’s financial health and overall reputation.
PL Dharma, an alumnus of Mangalore University with two decades of teaching experience on the Konaje campus, has held various administrative roles within the university. Acknowledging the tough road ahead, Dharma outlined three primary focus areas: the appointment of permanent staff to all teaching posts, resolution of examination issues, and efforts to transform and increase admissions for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Emphasizing the need for a permanent faculty, Dharma expressed his awareness of the challenges and commitment to addressing them.
