Sullia: The seer of Kukke Subramanya Samputa Shri Narasimha Swamy Matt, Sri Vidyaprasanna Theertha Swamiji, who went on a hunger strike on Saturday, October 13, ended his fast on Monday, October 15 after the chief minister and Pejawar Matt seer intervened.
The Kukke Subrahmanya Matt pontiff began his hunger strike on Saturday after the water supply to the matt was cut off. The matt relied on the water supply from the Kannadi Hole, a stream that flows in the Subramanya reserve forest. Supply to the matt was cut by the Forest Department on October 12, after the Subramanya Nagarika Hitarakshana Vedike accused the matt of drawing water illegally.
This, however, was only one of the reasons for the matt seer to go on strike. For long, the seer had been upset by the constant humiliation of the matt by the Subrahmanya Temple personnel, who would regularly announce that the devotees must offer poojas at the temple and not the matt, according to his previous complaints.
Politicians including Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and the seers of the other matts, had, on Sunday, pleaded with the Swamiji to call off his hunger strike. Obliging to their requests, the seer ended his fast saying that he was doing so as the CM and the Pejawar seer had assured him that the issues would be resolved.
