Mangaluru: The family of a convict comes forward to demand police protection in the wake of his recent release from prison. The incident goes back to 1994 where the accused, Praveen Kumar, was arrested for murdering four of his close relatives.
The man, now 60, was released in May 2023 on account of showing good behavior within the prison cells. However, his recent release seems to put his existing family in danger, including the man’s own wife, who pleaded against his release.
The family later alerted the police on a call that the man made to his younger brother, threatening to put his life in danger. They now demand that the police watch out for the whereabouts of the convict, and keep him from entering the Dakshina Kannada district, which is where they live.
The police however, did not send any response, leaving the entire family in a state of fear. Meanwhile Praveen, who now runs a tailoring shop near the Hindalga police station has so far given everyone around a good impression. His business seems to be thriving and he right now, has four people working with him at the tailoring shop.
He had made this decision to open a shop near the police station on his release seven months ago, when he learnt that his family objected to his release.
Since then, he has been working for the prison staff, officials and some nearby citizens who have recognized his tailoring skill.
Having worked as a tailor then too, the young Praveen, then addicted to alcohol and gambling, had murdered his aunt and three of his family members while staying at their home in Vamanjoor
He then fled from the scene, carrying along some stolen cash and gold. That was on the 23rd of February 1994. However, police officials now report that the man has shown considerable remorse for his actions in the past.
