Mangaluru: Ganja weighing 18.17 kg seized in various cases was burnt by the police as per court orders in the presence of Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner AB Ibrahim at the DC office premises on Friday, October 30.
The burnt ganja pegged at approximately Rs 5 lakh was seized in cases from 2008 – 2011, whose judgments have already been passed by the respective courts.
Addressing the media and members of various organizations gathered, DC Ibrahim said that the intention to make the burning process public was to create awareness. Speaking further, he said that the district administration has information about ganja peddling in various parts of the district and that it is working towards tightening vigilance. He said that a meet comprising the DGP, ACS (Home), himself and concerned department heads was called couple of months ago and that a special gang consisting members from the Police, Excise, Revenue and Forest Departments was formed to counter drug peddling.
He called on the youth to stay away from drugs and urged smokers to mend ways before it is too late.
Deputy Commissioner (Excise) LA Manjunath asked the public to inform the police department if any drug peddling cases were encountered by them. He promised that the details of the informer will be kept confidential.
