Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada is taking strides towards greener transportation with the introduction of electric buses in the region.

Operated by the KSRTC Mangalore Puttur divisions, these electric buses will serve prominent routes within the district and some inter-district routes across the state.

Although the buses have not commenced operations yet, Rajesh Shetty, senior division controller of KSRTC Mangalore, has reassured the public that they can expect them to start operating soon.

Citizens will have the option to choose between AC and non-AC buses based on their comfort and preference.

Initially, the routes from Mangalore will include destinations such as Dharmasthala, Kasargod, and Manipal. Each bus will have a single recharge capacity allowing it to cover a distance of approximately 200 kilometers, equivalent to a two-hour run.

As a result, these buses will not be traveling to destinations like Bangalore and Mysore initially. However, there are plans to introduce around 100 more buses within the next year.

Currently, there is a tender process underway to establish charging stations at Bejai’s Mangalore depot and Kuntikana. Each station will be equipped with a total of 15 charging points to support the growing fleet of electric buses.
