Anganwadi centres in Dakshina Kannada have decided to prolong their summer vacation due to the unprecedented rise in mercury levels. Typically lasting for about 15 days, the vacation this year has been extended to 42 days, beginning from April 15 and lasting until May 26. This decision comes amidst concerns over the scorching heat and prolonged dry spell experienced across the state.

Reasons for Extension:

The extreme weather conditions have made it challenging for children to attend the centres regularly. As a result, authorities have opted to grant an extended break to ensure the well-being of the children. A circular issued by Dr. GC Prakash, the secretary of the Women and Children Welfare Department, emphasized the need for this prolonged vacation due to the rising temperatures.

Modified Operations:

During this period, children are advised not to visit the centres. Instead, they will be provided with take-home food until May 26. Meanwhile, staff members will continue their duties until noon until May 10, after which they will also commence their 15-day annual summer break.

Response and Appreciation:

The decision to extend the vacation has been well-received by the community, with senior anganwadi workers expressing their appreciation. This marks the first instance of centres closing due to extreme summer heat, highlighting the severity of the current weather conditions.

Additional Considerations:

In addition to weather-related concerns, the notification from the department also cited the need for anganwadi workers to focus on their poll duties during this period.
