Brazilian reality TV star MC Thammy, who has social media fan following of 2 million, learned a painful lesson about the dangers of following online trends. Thammy participated in a viral “ice challenge” that resulted in first and second-degree burns on her feet.
The challenge involved submerging feet in a mixture of ice and coarse salt for 15 minutes. However, Thammy’s experience turned nightmarish after removing her feet from the ice. She endured excruciating pain and discovered three of her toes had turned black, prompting a visit to the hospital.
Doctors diagnosed Thammy with a combination of burns. The outside of her feet suffered from first-degree burns, while the undersides sustained more severe second-degree burns. Thammy was informed that prolonged exposure to the ice mixture could have led to blood clots (thrombosis) or even tissue death (necrosis).
Thammy’s injury impacted her mobility. She currently relies on a plastic chair pushed by her mother to move inside her house. She expressed gratitude for her mother’s support. She admitted that she made insensitive statement about wheelchairs.
She shared photo of her using wheelchair and wrote, “If you can not fly, run! If you can not run, walk! If you can not walk, crawl! Keep going anyway.”
