Mangaluru: The Federation of Non-Governmental Organisations here has urged the government on Friday, May 10, to set up a Circuit Bench of the High Court in  Mangaluru.

The federation has opined that if the government set up a Circuit Bench of High Court in Mangaluru, it would help the people of coastal districts Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Kodagu districts.

Addressing the reporters, Federation President B S Chandru said, “The federation had been urging the government to set up the Circuit Bench of High Court in Mangaluru from the past two years and a memorandum too was submitted to the Chief Minister, law minister, governor among other elected representatives. However, no measures have been taken in this regard so far. It is simply a waste of time and energy for the people who are living in coastal districts to approach the High Court. If the demand is not fulfilled, the federation would stage a strong protest in front of the houses of elected representatives.”

Chandru opined that as the government had set up circuit benches in Gulbarga and Dharwad districts, the people of both the areas had benefited a lot. Hence, same measures should be taken in Mangaluru also, which would benefit thousands of people, he said.

Meanwhile, the federation also spoke about the water problems in the city. Federation Advisory Board Director Padmanabha Ullal informed that the failure to revive water sources like lakes, open wells, ponds was the reason for the crisis in the district.

Honorary President of the Federation, Vijaykumar Hegde opined that unscientific distribution of water to the industries without bothering about its impact on drinking water supply, had led to the crisis in the district.

He urged the administration to ask the industries to make alternate arrangements for their water needs.
