Mangaluru: It’s one thing to rob a rich man of a few fish, but that is not the case with the incident that took place yesterday, on the 30th of January where Paravathavya Kondaivya, Sheenu, and Shivaraj, with three other men who catch fish for a living, were robbed of boxes containing fish worth five lakh while in the middle of the sea.

It was a party of six fishermen who went out to sea on a trawl boat with the group, hailing from Andhra and led by Mohammed Mustafa, and returning from a successful time of fishing. The men were only ten miles away from the lighthouse when they were suddenly attacked by a team of about 20 men, coming in a purse seine boat.

On approaching the trawl boat, about eight from the team lunged for the boxes, which they then carried away in their purse seine boat. There was little that those around could do to help, and those who did try their best to come forward were not just attacked by the strong men but robbed of their phones too.

Following the incident, a complaint has been lodged at the Kaup police station, but little can we expect this to be of any help. In the end, all we can do is feel sorry for the poor men and hope that similar incidents do not occur again.
