Kasargod: Naming of a street in Kasargod as ‘Gaza Street’ has made way for a controversy.

A street in Thiruthi ward has been named after the disputed Gaza stripe between Egypt and Israel and the City Muncipal Council has claimed that it is not aware of the development. Following this the Intelligence Wing has sprung into action and is reportedly keeping a tight vigil in the area as there are all possibilities of extremists playing behind the scenes.

The investigation wings are co-relating this to the incident of 21 missing persons who had left Kasargod to join the Islamic State. All of the 21 hail from places near to this street.

It is said that the street near Thuruthi Jumma Masjid was concretised utilising the CMC funds and then renamed as ‘Gaza Street’. The street was inaugurated by Kasargod Zilla Panchayat President A G C Basheer. But, the CMC officials say that they had no idea with regard to the renaming of the street. Their stand has been endorsed by CMC President Bifathima Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, the local BJP leaders are asserting that roads in Kasargod are being renamed on purpose by a section of people.

They say that the change of name never comes up for discussion in the CMC because of the opposition it usually evokes. Hence many roads have been renamed without taking the consent of the CMC.
