Mangaluru: The death of a Hindu man, followed by a day of unrest in Dakshina Kannada district was among the prime focal points of television news on Friday

However, while everything has pretty much returned to normalcy, life for Deepak’s family – his 55-year-old mother and 24-year-old brother, who is mute has probably come to a standstill. With the sole earning member of the family no more, the mother holds her responsible for having not allowed Deepak to go abroad for a job some time back because had she done so, her son albeit far away would have been very much alive.

Who was Deepak and Why was he killed?

He was targeted because he was a member of a Hindu organization, claimed some while others have stated a recent tiff between Deepak and few others over a bunting issue.

A political slugfest has ensued following the murder where parties have pointed at each other and a probale bid to gain victory in the upcoming polls as the reason behind the turmoil in the district.

However, all reasoning apart, people who are familiar with Deepak, his friends vouch for his friendliness and have said that neither was he associated with any Hindu organization nor was he radical.

For Abdul Majid (Deepak’s employer) he was a trustworthy friend, a dedicated worker and a respectful person. The fluency with which Deepak spoke the Beary dialect amazed me, says Majid adding that Deepak had to interact with several Muslim persons in his course of work.

How anyone could harbour vengeance against such a person is beyond my understanding, says a grief-stricken Abdul Majid.

Life will never be same

Yes, life will move on but it will never remain the same for Prema Rao who lost her son, thanks to some machete-yielding people.

Having shouldered the responsibility of his family at a very young age, Deepak wished to provide a comfortable life to his mother. He was quite happy that the loan he had availed for his home was nearly repaid and had promised to release his mothers jewellery pledged in the bank, recalls his mother who says that she lost the most valued asset of her life.

While the government has announced a Rs 10 lakh compensation to the aggrieved family, justice for Deepak is the prime thing sought by his mother.
