Kasargod: The wildlife has been severely affected by blatant urbanisation and rapid development. Keeping the well being of little winged marvels in mind, the forest department and bird lovers have come up with bird maps, which is the first in India. Survey would be conducted under this project in two phases to map varieties of birds and document them.
The first phase will be held from July 15 to September 13 and the second phase will be held from January 13 to March 13. In the survey the department will collect data on total population, types, migratory birds and their habitat.
The survey will be conducted by students, lecturers, youth, bird experts and officials led team from 6 am to 10am and in the evening from 4 pm to 6pm.
The department has plans to complete the bird map within three years which will be helpful for bird lovers and the students in particular under one roof to know about endangered and other information about birds.
Due to the destruction of forests, mushrooming of mobile towers and other man-made menace, birds are endangered. Sparrows, specifically seem to have vanished from surface of earth. Hence the bird map project will help the next generation know about preserving wildlife.
The survey was inaugurated here on July 15 by DC K Jeevan Babu at Vidyanagar Vanashree complex.
SP K G Simon and assistant forest conservation officer P Biju were present.
