Mangaluru: Several medical colleges across Karnataka witnessed IT-raids by the investigation wing officials after they received reports of colleges enrolling low-merit candidates in exchange for huge sums of money.
During the raid 60 kg of diamond, Rs 20 crore in cash, and 50-carat diamond was unearthed, according to IT officials who wished to stay anonymous told ET. They also told ET that these raids are expected to continue for three more days.
Raids were conducted in Yenepoya Medical College, Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences and Srinivas Group, AJ Shetty Medical College in Mangaluru, and Sridevi Institute of Medical Sciences in Tumakuru. In Bengaluru, Sapthagiri Medical College, East Point Academy, BGS Medical College, and Aakash Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre were raided.
A similar raid was conducted by the IT department in October 2019 with reports emerging that seats were sold for black money through societies and trusts.
Each seat was sold at an approximate price between Rs 80 lakh and 1.5 crores with a variance of status and location. Official added that they had received specific information that colleges were colluding with certain students to block the seats for top rank holders. After these seats were left vacant, they were sold to prospective students.
