Mangaluru: To address the issue of the lack of kerosene for local fishermen in the coast, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, U T Khadar called for a press conference on Thursday, October 20. A total of 2,74,200 litres of kerosene has been allotted for the local fishermen through the Karnataka Fisheries Department Corporation (KFDC) to meet their demands.

Speaking to the members of the media, U T Khadar said that each of the 914 fishing permit holders under Country Craft Fishermen category will be provided with 300 litres of kerosene every month. “This supply of kerosene to the fishermen is not permanent. Kerosene will be availed to the fishermen at a subsidized rate once the Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan is convinced by the delegation of ministers representing the coastal areas”, Khadar added.

When asked about the Uniform Civil Code, Khadar said that targeting a religion should not be at the back of the minds but a discussion should be conducted with religious heads. “Religious scholars must be approached and an extensive discussion must be held with them so that there is a positive outcome”, he added.

After asking about his take on the District Congress Committee interim President Ibrahim Kodichal’s comment on triple talaq and Uniform Civil Code, Khadar said that the party leaders should consult religious leaders before making comments that can taint the party.

Raising the topic of celebration of Tipu Jayanti even after a series of threats and protests, Khadar mentioned that the Government will observe Tipu’s birthday this year as well. “There are other birthdays of renowned people like Kanaka Dasa and Valmiki which are celebrated; Tipu should also be given a prominent position. Tipu was a great person and only those who do not know his history are protesting against the celebration”, he concluded.
