Love for poor drives NRI Ortho surgeon transfer Stem cell tech to hospital

Belthangady: Renowned London based orthopedic surgeon Dr A A Shetty transferred patented research documents valued over several crores of rupees to Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Veerendra Hegde on December 26. The patented documents will ultimately help SDM hospital in Dharwad to incorporate stem cell therapy in treating patients seeking knee and joint replacement, thereby eliminating the use of steel rods,while reducing the cost of treatment considerably.

The technology transfer was done jointly by Dr. Asode Anathram Shetty alias Dr. A A Shetty, native of Koteshwar in Kundapur and a Korean researcher named Dr. Kim thorough Shetty Kim Research Foundation to SDM group.

Dr. Shetty based in London for the last 34 years has made significant strides researching in the field of orthopedics and currently is the Director of a group of Institutions in Medical Science.

His research enables patients to undergo knee replacement, joint replacement and other bone related surgical procedures in cost effective and painless route. The procedure involves, extracting the stem cells from the body of the patient, and injecting the same back into the afflicted zone of the patient’s body and monitor their development. This procedure eliminates the use of steel rods currently employed in similar surgeries and relieves the patient from undergoing painful surgeries and long recovery periods. The joint attachment will take place on its own with the development of stem cells in the affected area over a period of time.

Trials are being conducted on employing the new advanced cost-effective method, currently at a laboratory in Japan. Doctors at SDM hospital in Dharwad are being trained in the use of new procedure for the last one year and the hospital is almost equipped to handle patients with 75% progress made in the field.

Knee joint replacement and major surgeries involving broken limbs cost around Rs 3-6 lakhs and the new procedure is likely to make bring down the cost by a phenomenal 80% to benefit the poor in the society seeking advanced treatment.

Dr. Shetty is the fourth recipient from India of the renowned Hundtarium Melus award after its institution 200 years ago. Dr. Shetty also a professor has taken a major step to help people in his Motherland by foregoing the profits he could have earned in crores after of years of research in the field.

Dr. AA Sheety’s work in the field of research is highly commendable and the mission to reach out to the poor seeking advanced orthopedic treatment at affordable cost even more.
