Mangaluru: City Local Bodies’ contract workers to protest beginning Feb 1

Mangaluru: Contract workers employed by the City’s Local Bodies including garbage truck drivers, loaders, cleaners, helpers, sewer workers, water supply assistants will go on an indefinite strike from Wednesday February 1.

The demand is to make them direct wage payments to the contract labourers akin Pourakarmikas.

Speaking at a press conference, Coastal Division Co-ordinator of the Karnataka State Corporation, City Council, Municipality, Town Panchayat Contract Employees’ Association B. K. Annappa Karekkadu said that more than 15,000 contract workers across the State will go on strike. Contract employees of 330 State Urban Local Bodies will also participate in the strike, he added.

“Services such as drinking water supply and sanitation services will be stopped from February 1. A jatha and sit-in protest will be held in Mangaluru,” he informed.
