Mangaluru: A man who was accused of sexual assault by marriage promises was acquitted by a court here.

The accused, Taranath, a Konaje resident was found not guilty of the allegations made against him.

According to the chargesheet, Taranath harassed a young woman from the same village where he lived after obtaining her phone number to start an intimate relationship with her. He allegedly met the girl during the Belma Bandi Jatra Mahotsava on May 3, 2018. As per the chargesheet, he had taken her on a scooter to a secluded hill nearby under some pretext and had sexually abused her.

Taranath was arrested and a court case was filed against him following the girl’s complaint.

The evidence used against the accused, however, was considered unsatisfactory by the court. After examining the witnesses and evidence, Sixth Additional District Sessions Judge Srikanta Raj concluded that the prosecution had not proven the charges against the accused and acquitted Taranath of all charges.
