Mangaluru: Mangaluru City will be declared as ‘open defecation free’ city on October 2, to coincide with Mahatma Gandhi Jayanthi.

As per sources, the same will be done in two phases and in the first phase 20 wards will be declared open defecation free wards on August 15, while the rest will be done on Gandhi Jayanthi.

Kavitha Sanil, Chairperson of standing committee for Public health, Education and Social Justice keeping has taken several important steps based on the central government directive on Swatch Bharath Campaign to ensure the city is open defecation free and a clean city. In the recent past several measures have been taken by the MCC to construct individual and community toilets, segregation and collection of solid waste at source, its movement and processing at the end using scientific means.

Based on the information collected around 345 households were found without toilets. Financial assistance will be given to these households and around 34 public toilets will be constructed at important locations across the city under PPP basis , she clarified.

She sought people’s co-operation in making city clean and green and urged the public to inform on MCC staff on telephone lines 0824-2220306 or 155133 if they come across people indulging in open defecation. Families that do not have individual toilets can apply on or before Aug 13, 2016, she said.

Efforts are on to maintain 84 existing public toilets including the non-functional ones by involving those agencies which have bagged the tenders, failing which their tenders will be cancelled , she cautioned.
