Mangaluru: Following protests staged by students of of St Ann’s school, opposing the inauguration of a bar at Kuntikana here on December 7, Mangaluru City Corporation Mayor Kavitha Sanil backed out from the inaugural event stating that it would not be proper for her to inaugurate the bar.
Sanil, who was supposed to inaugurate the bar and restaurant was approached by high school students of St Ann’s on her arrival here urging her not to inaugurate the bar, which school authorities have claimed to be located within 100 meters radius of the school.
However, the owner of the bar says that the department concerned has given the licence after examining it properly and hence was legal.
The school’s PTA member Jasmine D’ Souza speaking to mediapersons said, “We have filed a complaint with the excise department commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner but there has been no response from their side. When we measured the distance by ourselves, we found that the bar is located only 80 meters away from the school. This is a violation of law.”
Sanil, while asserting that there was some confusion regarding this issue said, “The department will have to resolve this. Without the issue being resolved, it is not proper for me to inaugurate it hence, I am going back.”
