Mangaluru: MLC Ivan D’Souza suspects a hidden agenda behind the two-day discussion on the Constitution announced by Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri.

According to Kageri, a special discussion on the Constitution is scheduled to be held on March 2 and 3, in the backdrop of the 70th year of the adoption of the Indian Constitution. But Ivan has raised the suspicion that the scheduled discussion might have been called to justify the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and National Register of India (NRC), and not to discuss the Constitution.

“Both the government and the Speaker are misusing their power by announcing a two-day special discussion on the Constitution in the Assembly. If a discussion is needed, let us discuss the 100-year-old IPC, CRPC and revenue Act. Why is there a need to discuss the Constitution? The Speaker should review his decision of holding a special discussion on the Constitution,” he stressed.

Commenting on the Karnataka High Court’s recent verdict that the imposition of Section 144 during the protest against CAA, Ivan said, “The High Court has ruled that the Commissioner of Police’s decision to impose 144 Section during the CAA protests was illegal. The move of the Commissioner also led to the police firing and death of two innocent people. I will also demand the Chief Minister, Home Minister and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister to apologise to the public.”
