Mangaluru: Jamun, also known as java plum, black plum, and jambolan, has seen a steep price hike this year due to increased demand.
The fruit that cost around Rs. 250 per kg in 2019, however, it was sold for around Rs. 400 per kg last year. This year it is sold for Rs. 600-800 per kg in the city on Thursday May 12.
Jamun is becoming increasingly popular due to its medicinal benefits.
The season usually starts in March, but the fruit was only available in the market a week ago this year.
Jamuns are typically purchased between April and June in Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. According to sources, the reason for the high price of the fruit is that a limited supply is arriving in the market.
However, the quantity is expected to rise and the price will drop in the coming days, as fruit from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu is expected to arrive soon.
