Mangaluru: The deputy commissioner will be directing the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) to introduce “Electronic Road Pricing” system to avoid traffic congestion.
Disclosing this while chairing the RTA meeting at the DC office here in the city on February 5, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil said that he would also instruct the MCC to introduce the “Congestion Pricing” technique, by forming the Electronic Road Pricing system in the Mangaluru City to reduce and avoid traffic congestion.
In the Electronic Road Pricing system, tax is levied on most private vehicles entering the city in an attempt to avoid traffic congestion. “Electronic Road Pricing is highly essential to a city like Mangaluru”, DC said.
“We are depending on private vehicles instead of public mode of transport. In the city, private vehicles have encroached the public places. As a result there are no footpaths, cycling bays. Hence inorder to avoid traffic congestion in the city, I will hold meeting with MCC officers and direct them to introduce ERP system under the Smart City Programme. If introduced, Mangaluru will be the first such city in the entire country”, DC said.
He also expressed that the city has a beautiful heritage which is getting destroyed. Public places have been used by the private vehicles. There should be more public places in the city park. The city should be liveable, DC added.
He also urged that people should depend on public mode of transportation.
ADC Kumar, SP Ravikanthe Gowda and RTO G S Hegde were also present in the meeting.
