Mangaluru: Quickly responding to MLA Vedavyas Kamath’s recent initiative of a plastic waste-free Mangaluru, Tandoor Express restaurant of the city has started wrapping its food (non-gravy) in banana leaves, thereby becoming a role model for others.

The hotel management has decided to try this method out for 48 hours.

Mangaluru has several hotels and many batches of parcels are delivered from these hotels to customers at their home or workplace. Most of these parcels are packed in plastic take away containers adding to the already major plastic menace. However, this initiative of Tandoor Express, located in Karangalpady, is worth appreciating.

“It’s a great initiative and we are starting off with seafood, which will be wrapped in banana leaves and for the betterment of the city, we will try our best to make Mangaluru plastic waste-free,” said Vadi Shenoy, owner of Tandoor. He also added that this method will be on an experimental basis as they need to check how long it will last before being delivered.

The coastal belt already has a culinary tradition of cooking certain food items in banana leaves. Packing seafood in banana leaves will only increase the flavour.
If every hotel in Mangaluru decides to do the same, then more plastic waste will be prevented from going to landfills.
