Mangaluru: In a big set back to the people of the Dakshina Kannada district, who are facing a shortage of water, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has approved the controversial Yettinahole project.
Dismissing all applications filed before them in this regard, the Tribunal gave the project the green signal.
The NGT completed the hearing on April 13 and reserved its order which was delivered on Friday.
The bench, headed by chief of the NGT Adarsh Kumar Goel, directed the union environment ministry to look into the work and ensure action if any violations occur.
The petitioners had alleged that the state government violated environmental norms to take up the project and claimed that the project is dangerous for the entire Western Ghat section. The state government, however, justified the project saying that it would supply drinking water to the masses.
