Manushree Devadiga, a student at St Aloysius PU College, has demonstrated exceptional academic prowess despite grappling with the challenges posed by Proteus syndrome, a rare genetic condition. This syndrome triggers excessive growth of bones, skin, organs, and tissues, leading to significant physical impairments. For Manushree, the condition primarily affects her legs, making movements laborious and painful.
Undeterred by her medical condition, Manushree achieved remarkable success in the commerce stream, securing an impressive score of 583/600 (97.17%), with perfect scores of 100 in mathematics and accounts. Transitioning from Mumbai to Mangaluru for a more supportive academic environment, Manushree encountered numerous obstacles during her time at PU college.
Despite the hurdles, Manushree’s determination remained unwavering. Her uncle, Rajesh Devadiga, an autorickshaw driver, ensured her daily commute from Mulki to college, where she relied on a wheelchair for mobility. In November, Manushree faced severe complications from her illness, resulting in hospitalization and a month-long absence from classes.
However, with unwavering support from her teachers, friends, and well-wishers, Manushree persevered through her challenges. She credits her teachers, especially her class teachers, for their invaluable assistance. Grateful for the extra sessions and personalized guidance provided by her teachers, Manushree acknowledges their role in her academic success.
Fr Clifford Sequeira, the principal of St Aloysius PU College, lauded Manushree’s achievements, hailing her as an inspiration to many. Despite her illness, Manushree’s determination and resilience propelled her towards academic excellence, showcasing the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
